Course Objective

This course aims to provide the knowledge about traffic engineering and its importance, to give information about traffic management methods, description of people, vehicle and road characteristics and relationships and to provide experience for the evaluation of traffic surveys and data.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to collect traffic flow data
2   To be able to calculate the characteristics of traffic flow elements
3   To be able to analyze a transportation facility (road segment, intersection etc.) from different points of view
4   To be able to interpret the problems of a highway segment/intersection
5   To be able to report and present the related calculations and discussions

1 Introduction to traffic engineering, characteristics of highway traffic problems, sections of traffic engineering, traffic rules
2 Introduction to traffic engineering (cont.), control devices, introduction to traffic management
3 Vehicle operation characteristics, movement theory, acceleration, braking distance
4 Economy, fuel and operation characteristics, effect of sight on vehicles
5 Road use, sight, hearing and adaptation to environment, environmental factors
6 Speed, classification of speed, measurement of spot speed and its statistical mean, running speed and overall speed
7 Traffic volume and traffic density
8 Speed, volume and density relations
9 Traffic counts, volume counts, pedestrian counts
10 MID-TERM EXAM
11 Traffic counts (cont.), cordon counts, origin-destination counts, gravity counts
12 AADT and HTC concepts
13 Student presentations
14 Evaluations of applications in practice
