Course Objective

The course will provide methodologies and applications for the preparation of construction areas before the structural works.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Earthworks types, the stages of the earthworks and to classify the soils.
2   To recognize required working machines and their properties for earthworks
3   Efficiency of earthwork machines and specify the factors with main lines that affect the efficiency
4   To select the appropriate working machine type which is suitable for excavation,
5   To calculate road cross-sections area, the volume of excavation and filling
6   To decide soil distribution with Bruckner's diagram
7   To indicate productivity and organization with main lines in earthworks construction sites.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 General introduction of earth works, the stages of earth works, types of earth works.
2 The types and properties of soil in earth works, soil types in earth works, swelling and settling of soils, the compaction of embankments, the degree of compaction, the calculation methods of width and height related to embankments.
3 The earth works in highway engineering, the quick and approximate calculation of volume of earth work, the application of the alignment to the land.
4 Volume calculations, volume calculations based on the types of cross section
5 Bruckner's diagrams, soil distribution, the properties of Bruckner's diagrams
6 Excavation methods and the general evaluation of excavation works.
7 The production and compaction methods of embankments, the diagram and use of proctor.
8 The material selection for filling purposes, compaction equipments and their efficiency.
9 The mechanical tools used in earth works, the calculation of efficiency and cycle period, transportation types and equation of motion.
10 MIDTERM EXAM
11 Applications related with the calculation of efficiency and cycle period.
12 The types of explosives used in earth works, the opening of drains, the calculation of the quantity of explosives related to earth works
13 The productivity and organization in construction sites in terms of earth works, criteria for yield, the organization types and the selection of appropriate structure. The cost in earth works construction sites, the cost of operating vehicles in sites, calculation of cost of operating vehicles, expenses in earth works
14 Homework submission, presentations and general discussions
