Course Objective

The aim of the course to give knowledge about railways, railway vehicles and geometrical properties of railway route. Also it will give knowledge about railway superstructure design principles and traffic estimation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Trains, to recognize and classify railway transport properties and activities
2   To describe necessary facilities and features for railway infrastructure
3   Railway capacities and specify the factors with main lines that affect the capacity
4   Railway route selection, geometric elements, to determine superstructure design
5   To compare railway superstructure design methods.
6   To identify deformations in railway superstructure, to decide about maintenance and repair methods

6 Route (continue), standard route elements,
7 Slopes, curbs, super elevation,
8 Route (continue), transition curves, wide and number of route, cross sections, standard dimensions
9 Route (continue), the railway route survey, preliminary project studies
10 Superstructure, properties of railway elements, poses, construction techniques of routes
11 MIDTERM EXAM
12 Traffic, possible traffic,

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Visual presentations of the course, presentation slides and lecture notes (lecture notes and presentations will be sent to the students by e-mail before the lesson). The term paper and it's presentation related with railway infrastructure and traffic volume estimation.

70% attendance to the course will be required. Writing instructions of the term paper and Topics will be send to students at the beginning of the term.
