Course Objective

In this course, identification and mechanism of durability problems of reinforced concrete structures will be presented within the scope of this course. The possible physical, mechanical and chemical causes of deterioration will be evaluated and methods of repair&strengthening will be presented.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course the students will be able to define the basic concepts of concrete microstructure, pore size distribution and types of cracks in concrete
2   to differentiate the types and possible causes of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures
3   to select the materials that can be used for repair-strengthening of reinforced concrete structures
4   to conduct experiments in order to determine the durability and water absorption properties of cement mortars
5   to examine the effects of mineral additives on durability of cement mortars by using the experimental data
6   to make conclusions from the experimental data by using graphics and tables
7   to present the results obtained from experimental studies
8   to compile the literature data about the materials and methods used in experimental studies
