Course Objective

Knowledge about determining the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of materials will be presented within the scope of Construction Materials-I course. Additionally, in order to identify the material properties, basic concepts on measurement methods of strain, rheology, viscoelasticity, periodic loading and fatigue issues will be lectured. In the second stage of the course; basic characteristics of engineering metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics and glass materials, bituminous materials and wood will be presented.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   define the concept of stress-strain and basic mechanical properties of materials.
2   to express the relationship between stress and strain characteristics of different types of steels.
3   to distinguish between the basic concepts of the materials related with the microstructure and mechanical properties.
4   to choose proper materials according to their application areas.
5   to calculate the physical properties of materials for comparison purpose by using the related equations (porosity, compactness, BHA, density, water absorption, capillarity, thermal coefficients...)
6   to implement basic rheological models for any time related stress-strain problems.
7   to compare different materials considering their physical and mechanical properties.
