Course Objective

To set up background information about strong ground motion, earthquake-site-building interactions, attenuation relationships and earth scientist responsibilities defined in Turkish building codes

1 Introduction (contents and references). Earthquake as wave motions
2 What is strong ground motion and how is it recorded
3 What are strong ground motion parameters
4 Behavior of the sites during the earthquakes. Effects of local site conditions on ground motions. Effects of earthquakes on structures, interaction between site and structures
5 Consolidation, liquefaction, landslide and slope stability problems generated by earthquakes
6 First mid-term examination
7 Attenuation relationships
8 Strong ground motion studies in Turkey and the world
9 Earthquake-resistant structural design
10 Discussion on earth scientist responsibilities defined in Turkish building codes
11 Examining and discussion on site classification and spectral acceleration descriptions in different design codes
12 Second mid-term examination
13 Disaster prepradness and studies for pre/sync/post duration of the disasters
14 Students' presantations
