Course Objective

The aim of this course is to define the importance of geological conditions of engineering structures using the site investigation technics such as borehole, road-cut, trench, gallery which display the basement rock and express the relations between geological conditions and properties of materials that will be used in construction works.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to recognize the sections of the Earth and the rock forming minerals
2   To be able to define igneous, sedimentary and metamrphic rocks
3   To be able to understand topographic and geological maps and create cross sections
4   To be able to understand earthquakes and their occurrence mechanism
5   To be able to recognize the mass movements and landslides
6   To be able to show the position of groundwater within the Earth, its movements and groundwater exploitation methods
7   To be able to express the effects of the geological structures to the dam and tunnel constructions
8   To be able to correlate the geological parameters that affect the quarrying
