Course Objective

The aim of this course is to determine geological and biological evolution of the earth from its formation to today. Determination of geographic and climatic changes of the earth on a geological scale and explanation the geological position of the Turkey in this context is also aimed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   able to identify geological time and time-rock units and geological age concepts.
2   able to identify evolution of crust and life, and epirogenic and orogenic events.
3   able to express geology, paleotectonic and paleogeographic evolution of Turkey.
4   able to link litostratigraphy with paleoclimate, paleotectonics and paleogeography.
5   able to do paleogeographic map and create time-rock stratigraphic column of an area.
6   able to relate geology of an area to regional geology.
7   able to figure out historical geological evolution of an area.
8   able to relate paleotectonics, paleogeography and paleoclimate to economical geology.

1 Geologic time, time-rock and geologic age concepts, time scale and formation of the earth.
2 Precambrian, infracambrian rocks, paleogeography and paleotectonics
3 Prekambrian rocks of Turkey, in relation with paleotectonics, paleogeography and paleoclimate.
4 Paleozoic rocks, paleogeography and paleotectonics.
5 Paleozoic rocks of Turkey, in relation with paleotectonics, paleogeography and paleoclimate.
6 Mesozoic rocks, paleogeography and paleotectonics.
7 lab. exam.
8 Mesozoic rocks of Turkey, in relation with paleotectonics, paleogeography and paleoclimate.
9 Cenozoic rocks, paleogeography and paleotectonics.
10 Cenozoic rocks of Turkey, in relation with paleotectonics, paleogeography and paleoclimate.
11 Paleotectonic and neotectonic periods of Turkey and relation with active tectonics.
12 Tectonic belts of Turkey and tectonostratigraphy of the belts.
13 Distribution of economical formations in Turkey and relation with tectonic belts, paleogeography and paleoclimate.
14 midterm exam.

Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 will be assessed by mid-term, final exam and makeup exam.
Learning outcomes 5 and 7 will be assessed by lab. exam.
