Course Objective

Within the context of this course, the most common analytical techniques for minerals and rocks will be introduced and at which laboratories these analytical instruments are located and how they would be accessed to.

2   Operating principals of analytical instruments which will be used within the context of the course
3   Enabling of measurements by instruments within the context of the course

6   Ability of using Powerpoint, searching literature, doing laboratory work, using analytical instruments etc

1 Introduction to analytical techniques
2 Introduction to tecniques and principals of XRD instrument and sample preparation for analysis
3 Presentation of XRD laboratories in Turkey. Accomplishment of measurements by an XRD instrument
4 Introduction of X-ray fluorescence and principals of techniques
5 Accomplishment of measurements by an X-ray fluorescence instrument
6 Theory of graphics obtained from XRD and X-ray fluorescence instruments and their interpretation
7 1.Exam
8 Introduction of methods and principals of an atomic absorbtion spectrometer instrument and sample preparation
9 Analytical measurements by an atomic absorbtion spectrometer (instrument)
10 ICP, ICP MS techniques and and introduction of some recent techniques and their principals
11 ICP, ICP MS techniques and application of some of the recent techniques
12 Visiting certain commercial geochemical laboratories and observing their operation and analytical techniques on site
13 Prctical application of geochemical classification of rock samples with known chemical compositions
