Course Objective

Teaching the mechanical behaviour of rocks

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to describe the physical properties of rocks and the concept of rock mechanics
2   Being able to determine stress-strain relations in rock
3   Being able to analyse uniaxial, biaxial and tri-axial stress conditions
4   Being able to interpret the strength parameters from the shear tests
5   Being able to analyse the stability of rock slopes

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Physical properties of rocks and the concepts of rock mechanics
2 Determination of stress conditions in rocks, stress analyses (computing the principal stresses)
3 Strength of rocks, type of deformation
4 Mohr circles, uniaxial compression tests and their analyses
5 Plane problems and biaxial stress
6 Problems related with uniaxial and biaxial stresses and their solutions
7 1.Midterm
8 Stress-strain relations and problem solving
9 The case of tri-axial stress and tri-axial test and Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion
10 Shear test, peak and residual internal friction angles and cohesions.
11 Problem solving related with the shear test
12 Elastic parameters and their relationships
13 Rock slope stability and computation of length of rock anchor and its spacing
14 2.Midterm
