Course Objective

The aim of this course is to be able to identify and apply the basic geological knowledge, ability and expleriences acquired within the previous three years of education to the engineering problems related with geology, and to use and apply these knowlege in designing solutions, planning and modelling stages.

3   To be able to apply basic knowledge on geology on the designing applications

5   To be able to create design models for solution of geological problems

7   To be able to plan the necessary studies for solution of engineering problems by preparing the teams, equipments and the budget
8   To be able to present the study results either orally, visually or in written expressions

Course Contents

1 The presentation of the geological engineering problem and/or project (dam, tunnel, road, bridge, settlement area, powerplant, water exploration, geothermal plant, landfill area etc. projects)
2 Examination of the related literature on the problem and/or project
3 Relating the lithostratigraphic, tectonic, sedimantological, paleontological and geological mapping elements with the problem and/or project
4 Relating the mineralogical, petrographic and petrological elements with the problem and/or project
5 Relating the hydrogeological elements with the problem and/or project
6 Evaluation of the economic, natural and environmental values in the problem and/or project area with respect to the impacts of the solution of the problem or realization of the project
7 1.Midterm exam and 1. Presentation
8 Gathering and evaluation of all the data related to the problem/project
9 Relating soil and rock mechanical elements and engineering problems.

Assessment Criteria

Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 will be assessed via midterm presentations, project and final presentation. Learning outcome 8 will be assessed with the final presentation and via oral presentation in front of the poster

Course Policies and Rules

1. First 7 weeks of the course starts with a real or fictional scenario including one or more geological engineering problems. For the next 7 weeks a new scenario is selected.
2. The class is divided into study groups of 8-10 students.
3. An instructor from the academic staff is assigned to every study group as the study director.
4. The study director attends all studies of the group.
5. The study director is both a lecturer and a supervisor.
6. Group studies are executed interactively.
