Course Objective

Within the scope of this course, the possible effects of mining operations will be investigated. In this context, the methods and techniques that would minimize the environmental impact of mining activities will be defined and their applicability will be analyzed. The measurement and evaluation techniques of certain hazards such as noise, dust and vibration which occur at mine sites will be handled and prevention measures will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to learn the environmental effects of mining activities and to gain the skill of measurement and interpretation of these effects.
2   To be able to make convenient material selection for the prevention of environmental effect of mining operations.
3   To be able to make plans forwarded to the prevention of environmental effect of mining operations.
4   To be able to apply special techniques and methods in order to reduce the environmental effect of mining activities.
5   To be able to follow up the legal aspect of environmental impact and to gain the ability of make interpretations out of these.

2 Visual contamination at open pit mines and pre-production and post-production suggestions for the solution of this problem
3 Dust generation sources at open pit mines and prevention techniques
4 Investigation of the legal regulations related to dust measurement
5 Noise generation at open pit mines and prevention techniques
6 Investigation of the legal regulations related to noise measurement
7 Mid-term Exam
8 Definiton of blast-induced seismic energy and vibration
9 Effects of frequency and wavelength at blasting operations
10 Definitions of scaled distance and particle velocity, calculation and use in blasting design
11 Measurement techniques of blast-induced vibration and interpretation of results
12 Factors that affect vibration and prevention techniques
13 Investigation of the legal regulations related to measurement of blast-induced vibration
14 Investigation of special controlled blastng methods intended for the prevention of blast-induced environmental impact
