Course Objective

The objective of the course is teaching the chemical and engineering aspects of hydrometallurgical processes (leaching, adsorption, electrowinning, etc.) and recovering metallic values from metallic ores by these methods.

2   Solve a chemical problem,
3   Realize the role of solution chemistry in mineral processing,
4   Conduct leaching operations on the metallic ores in Turkey,
5   Discuss the results obtained from the applications.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Basic chemical principles: solution, dissolution, reaction types, pH, etc.
2 Solution Equilibria: ionic behavior, equilibrium constant, activity and activity coefficient, fugacity
3 Thermochemistry: Enthalpy, Standard free energy, Pourbaix diagram
4 Reaction Kinetics: Homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, reaction rate and mechanism, rate laws, activation energy, kinetic models
5 Electrochemical processes: Redox reacitons, ion conductivity, Faraday s law, Nerst equation, cell types
6 Extraction of metals from electrolyte: Chemical precipitation, electrolysis, cementation, ion-exchange and solvent extraction
7 Mid-term
8 Atmospheric leach of metallic concentrate sample: Sample preparation and chemical analysis
9 Solution preparation and investigation of effects of various leach parameters (temperature, concentration, etc.)
10 Analysis of the samples collected from electrolyte and evaluation of the results
11 Extraction of metallic values from electrolyte by various processes (Chemical precipitation, electrolysis, cementation, ion-exchange and solvent extraction)
12 Extraction of metallic values from electrolyte by various processes (Chemical precipitation, electrolysis, cementation, ion-exchange and solvent extraction)
13 Data examination of equilibrium and kinetics at dissolution and recovery stages
14 Assignment preparation and evaluation
