Course Objective

The course aims to give fundamental knowledge in processes for iron and steel making, various steps of production, problems faced in iron and steel plants, and also basic knowledge on the iron and steel products, the properties, the expected improvements and the expected research areas related to iron and steel products.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To explain the basic principles of extracting pig iron from iron ores, the types and use of pig irons,
2   To explain the production of steel from liquid pig iron, and the basics of BOF and EAF management,
3   To relate residual elements and the modification of residuals to elimination practice of nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen,
4   To explain the ladle metallurgy, continuous casting and continuous casting products, the problems and solution methods in the management of these units,
5   To evaluate the quality of a steel product by taking into consideration the spectral analysis of the steel,
6   To explain the basics of sponge iron production,
7   To summarise the precautions to be taken towards the environmental issues and waste management.

1 Introduction; History of iron and steel making, the world production and trade of iron and steel, the development of iron and steel industry in Turkey, the role of steel in industrialization,
2 The world trade of iron ores, dressing of iron ores, sintering and pellet production, production and properties of coke to be used in blast furnaces,
3 Blast furnaces and pig iron production, the ladle treatments applied to BF pig iron,
4 BOF and steel production, deoxidation in steel production,
5 The definition and modification of inclusions in steels,
6 Revision of previous topics,
7 Midterm 1
8 Discussion of midterm exam results, The methods of ladle metallurgy,
9 Steel making by EAF method,
10 Introduction of continuous casting method, types and elimination of continuous casting defects,
11 Revision of previous topics,
12 Midterm 2
13 The production of sponge iron, the advantage and limitations of sponge iron,
14 Wastes in iron and steel plants, waste management and environmental issues.

Midterm exams, quizzes and final exams will be performed as classical written exams with closed book-notebook.

Class participation, attendance and discussion, are important and expected, and will be included in overall evaluation. Learning outcomes will be assessed by means of exam questions.
