Course Objective

This course aims to provide the students to comprehend urban renewal and urban conservation approaches, to define the types, causes and rationalities of the forms of interventions for the building environments, to explain the urban renewal and conservation approaches and processes in Turkey and World wide and to examine current examples of conservation implementations.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Will be able to define the historical characteristics of the city and the urban areas which will be interfered by urban planning (knowledge)
2   Will be able to describe the renewal and conservation theories which are for intervention of the built environment (comprehance)
3   Will be able to explicate the current urban transformation/conservation planning approaches (application)
4   Will be able to distinguish the differencies of urban transformation and urban conservation systems in Turkey and World wide (analysis)
5   Will be able to criticize the defects in the systems of urban transformation and urban conservation planning in Turkey (analysis)

2 The costs and benefits for the affected groups of urban renewal processes
3 The role of the real estate capital in the conformation of the city
4 The role of the urban renewal in the realization of spatial, sociological and cultural transformation
5 The legislation related to urban renewal
6 Cases from Worldwide related to urban renewal implementations
7 Cases from Turkey related to urban renewal implementations
8 Midterm Examination
9 Urban conservation approaches / Concepts of historical character and authentism
10 The critiques of the universal principles and basic internatinal agreements in conservation area
11 The legislative system for conservation of historical sites in Turkey I
12 The legislative system for conservation of historical sites in Turkey II
13 The concept of urban conservation site / The process of urban conservation planning / The conservation decisions on the scale of building and site
14 The examples of implementations in urban conservation sites / The argument on the relation of building and daily life on the basis of sociological, economic and spatial changing / Physical pattern elements / Local characteristics
