Course Objective

This course aims at defining general information about the subject and basic concepts of economics, making evaluations based on economic systems, relations and forms of production, formation of price in the market and several market types and providing an understanding of the development of global and national economy and the economic crisis.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able to define the basic concepts of the economics,
2   will be able to list the fundamental problems of economy,
3   will be able to express the economic systems and different market types,
4   will be able to summarize the periods of economic crisis,
5   will be able to explain the development of the stages of Turkish economy.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 What are the subjects and basic concepts of the economics
2 Concepts such as needs, commodity and services, problem of scarcity and alternative cost.
3 What are the fundamental problems of the economy
4 What are the economic systems Classification of economic systems; definition of Capitalist Economy Model, Socialist Economy Model, Mixed Economy Model.
5 Production and production forces, relations and forms of production, capitalist mode of production, development of capitalism and the emerging problems, product and commodity, conditions of the commodity production and capital, surplus value and profit.
6 Concept of market and different market types (Perfect Competition Market, Monopolistic Market, Oligopolistic Market, Monopolistic Competition Market)
7 Concept of price, price types, demand and supply as the two major factor constituting price.
8 General overview of the global economy.
9 Classification of the economic crisis and different economic crisis.
10 Midterm Examination
11 International institutions that lead the economy.
12 Basic economic concepts (Inflation, deflation, stagflation, devaluation, revaluation, recession, consolidation, moratorium, rent, etc.)
13 Development of the economy of Turkey (1923-1960)
14 Development of the economy of Turkey (1960-2012)
15 Final Examination Week
