Course Objective

This course intends to give the basic concepts including information on the city, urban population, urban facilities, activities, population and building densities and different plans/planning levels and cover an overall framework of the profession.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able; to describe the city (knowledge) and list urban theories. (knowledge)
2   To acknowledge problems in city planning and collect information on planning scales (knowledge)
3   To conceive of planning levels and identify their functions (conception)
4   To distinguish between various cities and city planning experiences (analysis)
5   To relate concepts of population and building densities (analysis) and be able to make related calculations (analysis).

4 Plan types in urban and regional planning.
5 Relations between base-maps and plans.
6 Definitions from Development Law No. 3194.
7 Midterm Examination
8 Implementation plans, legends and codes (plan notes).
9 Concepts of population and building densities.
10 Calculation of Total Area Ratio (TAR) / density.
11 Types of city plans.
12 Problems in global urban agenda.
13 City planning in Turkey and in the world.
14 Professional education in urban planning.
