Course Objective

This course aims at defining urbanization and urban growth, presenting the concepts and theory in urban geography with the circumstances under which they have developed, getting to comprehend urban structure and land use, interpreting various city samples in the context of urban geography, and analysing the relationships between function and form in the city.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students, will be able to define urbanization and urban growth (Knowledge),
2   will be able to list different concepts of urban geography (Knowledge),
3   will be able to describe urban structure and land use (Comprehension),
4   will be able to interprete various city samples in the context of urban geography (Application),
5   will be able to relate function to form (Analysis).

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Course content of urban geography, concept of city, region and urbanization.
2 Urban geography studies, improved models, theories. Reading list will be given in this week.
3 Documentary film screenings for reading the urban geography over the samples
4 Position of urban geography within the discipline of geography, relations. Urban Functions and Functional Classification of Cities Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
5 Urban typologies. Settlement hierarchies.
6 Midterm examination
7 City trip.Efforts to read the city and urban geography, discussions.
8 Location and analysis of the interaction of urban functions.
9 Homework/Submission/Presentation

11 Homework/Submission/Presentation
12 Homework/Submission/Presentation Students will be required to submit their homeworks and present their studies briefly to each other in this week.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures, by using visual communication tools and city trips. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures. Homeworks will be given to students in 4th week and they will be asked to prepare their homeworks on the subjects given to them.
