Course Objective

This studio course introduces students to the fundamental knowledge and technical skills used by urban planners to create, research, analyze, and implement master plans at the city and regional level. The course covers and reviews all the required analytical and quantitative techniques for population, employment and areal land-use projections as well as site selection for master planning.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Comprehend the required legal and administrative knowledge for planning process,
2   Produce all the required quantitative and qualitative information for the planning site,
3   Make site selection decisions for urban and rural land-uses and perform employment, population and areal land-use projections,
4   Interpret the planning site with its local, regional and global environs,
5   Meet the planning standards with planning decisions using all the available spatial, social, and economic data and information,
6   Calculate the requirements for the planning site,
7   Interrogate the adequacy of legal and administrative standards with regard to living standards,
8   Report the planning process,

1 Organization of all data pertaining to the planning site, and making base maps.
2 Defining planning policies by the planning teams, and forming analysis teams.
3 Concluding the regional level analyses.

5 Introduction to the planning studies at the regional level.
6 Planning studies at the regional level continued.
7 Concluding the planning studies at the regional level; introduction to the analyses at the city level.
8 2nd Mid-term Jury
9 Concluding the analyses at the city level; introduction to the city level synthesis and population/employment projections through quantitative planning techniques and planning models.
10 Concluding the synthesis and population/employment projections; introduction to master planning at the city level.
11 Critiques and discussions on master plans at the city level continued.
