Course Objective

This course aims at defining planning thought and its practice, presenting planning theories with the circumstances under which they have developed, getting to comprehend actual planning approaches, interpreting the Turkish planning system as a case of practice, and analysing the relationships between theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students, will be able to define planning (Knowledge),
2   will be able to list different planning approaches historically (Knowledge),
3   will be able to describe actual planning approaches (Comprehension),
4   will be able to interprete the Turkish planning system historically (Application),
5   will be able to relate planning to practice (Analysis).

2 Planning history I: The Enlightenment and industrial revolution
3 Planning history II: planning as city design in early 20th. century
4 Planning history III: modernist planning in post-World War II era
5 Planning history IV: Neo-liberal Era after 1980
6 Midterm Examination
7 Urbanization Experience of Turkey Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
8 Institutionalisation of Planning in Turkey
9 Development of Urban Planning Practice in Turkey
10 Actual Planning Practice in Turkey
11 Homework/Submission/Presentation Students will be required to submit their homeworks and present their studies briefly to each other in this week.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures. Homeworks will be given to students in 7th Week and they will be asked to prepare their homeworks on the subjects given to them.
