Course Objective

Modernity is in tension with the traditional development processes, following the countries' internal dynamics. Modernity is criticized the social relations and capital accumulation process as well as because of the power to transform the spatial structure. Historical areas as a object of permeation process must be also conserved its information. In this course will focus on transformation process of historical urban areas, and dynamics of this process, and risks on these areas.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define reasons for formation of the historical urban centers (Knowledge),
2   will be able to explain economic and social reasons about formation of the historical urban centers (Comprehension),
3   will be able to interpret transformation forms of the historical urban centers (Application),
4   will be able to compare differences about the different spatial formations (Analysis),
5   will be able to criticize threats on historical urban centers (Analysis).

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 First phase of shopping: spaces that is needs by exchange economy / early period places that is needs of economic relations
2 From Agora to Forum Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
3 To be contented with existing in economic relations: Frugality in Dark Age
4 Declining economic relations and formation of New Ages infrastructure
5 New discoveries in the world, old spaces, unpredictable developments (Jewish Ghettos)
6 Spatial organization of the Classical Period Ottoman city centers, and Foundation (Vakıf) System
7 Functions that undertaken by city centers in Late Period Ottomans
8 Midterm Examination
9 Changes in production structure caused by Industrial Revolution needs / Expectations of new class on city center: Bon Marché, the passages
10 Trade on the street
11 Shopping Centers as new Consumption Temples caused by globalization, and Collapse Scenarios
12 New relations, new places: The new fate of historical city centers: Vacated and to dysfunctionalized places Students will be required to submit their homeworks
13 Proposed Solution: New investments in Central States
14 Return to urban centers: Gentrification

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures which supported by visual presentations.
Homework will be given to students in 2nd week and they will be asked to submit their homework to be prepared about the 12th week.
