Course Objective

This course aims at understanding the evolution and classification of new settlements, new cities as a means and purpose, design principles of new cities, changes in implementations and policy, trends of modern planned city development in the period of industrialization and post - "new towns" and the current urban problems and planning approaches.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to explain the development and exchange of cities from past to present (pre-industrial, post-modernism - the period of postmodernism, post-globalization, etc.).
2   will be able to list developing and changing planning approaches and theories from the emergence of cities to present
3   will be able to compare similar approaches and practices in Turkey with examples of overseas
4   will be able to interpret the formation of new cities, trends of modern planned urban development and current urbanization problems.
5   will be able to explain the emergence of new types of settlement at present and tomorrow's cities with the examples.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The city - urbanization - to become urbanized - urban planning, global metropolis and information city, to become urbanized and planning in Turkey, identity of urban planner, overview about the changing traits of the planning.
2 Urban design, transportation and cities, discourses on the new planning approach. Cities and urban planning in the process of modernization.
3 The social structure, cities and planning approaches of the period of Modernism and postmodernism. Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
4 Globalization, city and planning in a globalized world, the world city phenomenon and appearance of urban space. Theories of global stratification.
5 Planning theories and approaches from past to present. Changing planning of settlements and changing planning approach in Turkey.
6 Planned urban development currents in the period of industrialization and post-modern - new cities , contemporary urban problems and planning approaches.
7 Midterm Examination
8 Megacities. Megacity phenomenon and past, present, future and challenges of megacity. New approaches in planning. Examples from the world and Turkey.
9 Network Cities. Restructuring urban space in the process of Information society, network society. The network city in the world and network-city phenomenon in Turkey. New economy and economic geography. Students will be required to submit their homeworks and present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course.
10 Eco-city. Eco-city phenomenon and past, present, future and challenges of eco-city. Examples from the world and Turkey Students will be present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course.
11 Good City. Utopian tradition of utopian thought and planning, the concept of good city. Examples from the world and Turkey Students will be present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course.
12 Citta slow. Citta slow phenomenon and past, present, and future of citta-slow. Examples from the world and Turkey Students will be present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course.
13 Today's city features and thoughts on new planning approach.
14 The cities of the future - Utopias and utopian cities from past to present.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures. Homeworks will be given to students and they will be asked to prepare their homeworks on the subjects given to them.
