Course Objective

This course aims at considering the squatter house as the major component of the urbanisation practice of Turkey on the basis of illegal development and in an integrated perspective with the by-law through questioning it within a theoretical context and evaluating it through the cases with respect to the created social and spatial impacts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define the concept of squatter house (knowledge),
2   will be able to discuss the concept of squatter house within the historical process (knowledge),
3   will be able to relate the concept of squatter house with the political processes and populist approaches (comprehension),
4   will be able to explain the squatter house with the components of migration and poverty (comprehension),
5   will be able to question the practice of squatter house within the up to date experiences (analysis),
6   will be able to evaluate the urbanisation practice of Turkey and the planning system over the migration and squatter house practices (synthesis).

1 Discussing the definition of squatter house from different perspectives
2 The problem of squatter house in global scale and the impact on living environments
3 Considering squatter house within the context of illegal structuring of Turkey experienced historically
4 Evaluation of the concepts of squatter house and illegal development within the context of by-law (from the establishment of nation state until the 1980 period)
5 Evaluation of the concepts of squatter house and illegal development within the context of by-law (from 1980 until the present day)
6 Concepts of migration, urbanisation in Turkey and migration, examining the period between 1940s and 1980
7 The practice of migration and squatter house in Turkey in the post-1980 period, spatial and social transformations
8 Midterm Examination This week homework subjects will be given to the students.
9 The changing dynamics of urbanisation in the post-1980 period, the migration and squatter house based content of new urban poverty
10 Migration-based cleavage in cities
11 The changing relations of interdependence within the context of migration-based social cleavage processes, processes causing the instrumental construction of identity
12 Homework/Submission/Presentations This week students will submit their homework assignments and present each other during the two-hour course.
13 Historical development process of squatter house in Izmir

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures and the students will learn by attending and listening the lectures. Students will be asked to read articles related with the subject and to follow up the current news and share with the class. Besides the midterm examination, students will be asked to prepare a homework assignment.
