Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to understand the importance of water resources and the problems related with water, to understand possibilities and methods of integration water datas to planning process and thus to gain a planner perspective that is sensitive to water resource.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Recognize the importance of protecting of water resources,
2   Question the approach ways of current urban planning processes to water resources,
3   Critize water protection related legislation on the basis of resource conservation,
4   Recognize the importance riverbasin-based management and planning,
5   Calculate the capacity-demand balance of water resources in the process of plan preparation.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Recognizing the importance of water to all living organisms - the importance of water for different uses. Vital, economic, political, strategic and spatial significance.
2 Natural water cycle. Statistics on water resources (World and Turkey).
3 Interventions to the water cycle. Water problem in the world and Turkey, together with statistics.
4 International water issues. Description of transboundary waters and international waters and water use problems related with water resources that are shared by more than one nation.
5 Urban, rural and industrial water use. Examination of water consumption patterns in different residential areas in Turkey and its association with the sectoral structure.
6 The acquisition of the water. Acquisition and distribution process of a city's water. Dams-location criteria-environmental impacts. Example of the DSI II. Regional Directorate. Transport and distribution of water to the city. IZSU example.
7 Midterm examination
8 Water and space. The relationship between the formation of human settlements and water in the historical perspective. Water element in urban space. Coastal and port settlements.
9 Water and urban planning. Current situation and problems. Water and different scales of planning. The relation between land use, population density and water
10 Water legislation. International water policy. The EU Water Framework Directive. National water legislation and policies
11 Approach based on river basin planning. The importance of watershed protection. Watershed conservation planning in the practice of Turkey.
12 Presentation of homeworks
13 Inclusion of water resources as a data in to planning process. Urban development based on resource capacity.
14 DISCUSSION: How to define a planning process for protection of water resources
