Course Objective

This course will focus on Europe and Turkey as examples of urban conservation planning. The documentation on different scale of buildings and urban texture, making planning policy and planning strategy, differentiations about presentation and planning language, making planning decisions regarding the formation of contextual examples aims to be queried.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to list historical spatial characteristics of cities (Knowledge),
2   will be able to identify and explain differences of historical spaces depending on time and place (Comprehension),
3   will be able to interpret documentation techniques about historical structure and texture characteristics of different countries and cities (Application),
4   will be able to compare conservation planning approaches and techniques in Turkey and the other countries and to criticize the deficiencies of them (Analysis).
5   will be able to relate design and planning approaches and techniques for the conservation of historical areas (Analysis).

1 Architectural Documentation I: Access to historical information from the images: Postcards Izmir / Building identities: Data about architecture of a particular time period and place: Ankara-25 years of Republic / Data about building restitution: Cesky Krumlov (Czech Republic)
2 Architectural Documentation II: Documentation which establish a connection between the architecture and urban context: Beyoğlu / Izmir Hotels / Mersin Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
3 Urban Analysis I: Documentation which establish a connection between the street and urban context: Birgi / Izmir-Alsancak / York
4 Urban Analysis II: Social, functional, spatial analysis of historical areas: Kemeraltı (Izmir) IZTO datas / Cusco (Peru) / Buca (Izmir)
5 Urban Analysis III: Kentsel Analizler III: Analysis of historical areas: Gölyazı (Bursa)
6 Planning I: Bursa (1/100.000 scale) / Pamukkale (1/25000 scale)
7 Planning II: Zeyrek (Istanbul)-1/5000-1/1000 scales
8 Midterm Examination

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures which supported by visual presentations.
Homework will be given to students in 2nd week and they will be asked to submit their homework to be prepared about the 12th week.
