Course Objective

This course intends to focus on social, economic, legislative and technical dimensions of planning in a comprehensive manner, to evaluate planning approaches in terms of analysis and synthesis of socio-cultural structures, urban living areas, and technical facilities and to consider planning methods, concepts and understanding from past to future in order to extend the related knowledge on planning.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to list types and stages of planning from past to present.
2   will be able to relate the upper and lower scale plans, classifying the planning process.
3   will be able to repeat urban spatial research methods, analysis techniques and design principles.
4   will be able to memorize the legal and administrative regulations that take part in the planning and implementation process
5   will be able to negotiate spatial planning and urban planning history of Turkey.
6   will be able to interpret new concepts and understandings that emergence in the process of urban planning, spatial developments and future cities.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Planning typologies and internal relations
2 The planning process, different planning levels and relations with each other, role of planner.
3 Planning theories, the concept of spatial planning and strategic spatial planning. Homework topics will be handed out in this week.
4 History and development of urban planning in Turkey
5 Post-industrial cities, globalization and changing urban space
6 The cities as a physical, social and economic structure and the role of planning
7 The formation and characteristics of urban spatial structure and types of urban land use and types of density.
8 Midterm Examination
9 The process of urban research, spatial analysis techniques and components and construction of synthesis Students will be required to submit their homeworks and present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course.
10 Cities as living space, design and principles of housing and residential areas. Students will be present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course
11 Design and principles of working areas, services areas and the social and technical infrastructure Students will be present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course
12 Planning and implementation means, legal and administrative regulations and implementation issues Students will be present their studies briefly to each other in the second part of course
13 The changes of urban spatial structure which is created by slums and migration (change of urban centers, urban renewal, gentrification, urban rehabilitation, urban renewal concepts etc.)
14 Emergence of new concepts and new understandings in the urban planning, utopian urban plans and place of utopian plans in planning process.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures. Homework will be given to students and they will be asked to prepare their homework on the subjects given to them.
