Course Objective

The course aims to provide a general understanding of the optical chemical sensors , advantages and disadvantages of optical sensing, fields of application and analytical aspects of sensors.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding of basic instrumentation, (batch and flow systems), fiber optics and signal transducers for optical chemical sensing.
2   Undurstanding of indicator chemistry and analyte on basis of consequences, understanding of interactions taking place on sensor surface and solution
3   Matrix materials and immobilization of indicators (PVC, ethyl cellulose, sol-gel, hydrogels..), thin film preperation
4   Students are expected to perform analyte specific sensor design
5   Students should be able to adopt their general information regarding sensor design for different applications.

4 Fiber optics and optical chemical sensors
5 Sensors working on basis of conventional spectroscopic techniques
6 Matrix materials exploited in optical sensor design, immobilization techniques (mechanic, electrostatic and covalent immobilization
7 Miniaturazition of sensors
8 PVC, hydrogel, sol-gel based optical chemical sensors
9 Interactions taking place matrix analyte interface
10 Thin film preparation techniques
11 PVC based optical sensor applications (project based presentations by students)
12 Sol-gel based optical sensor applications (presentations by students)
13 Hydrogel and ethyl cellulose based optical sensor applications (presentations by students)
14 Final assesment of student presentations
