Course Objective

The macrocyclic ligands play a very important role in analytical chemistry applications. These compounds such as porphyrin, crown ether, azacrown ether, thiacrown ether, calixarene complex with metal ions and interact with organic compounds and use in their separation and determination. The objective of this course is to introduce the application of each macrocyclic compound in analytical chemistry. Thus, in this course the importance and applications in the areas such as extraction and chromatography in analytical chemistry of each macrocylic compound will be discussed and explained in details.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the each macrocyclic compounds and discuss the differences between chemical structures of these compounds
2   Examine the importance of macrocyclic compounds in analytical chemistry
3   Examine the usuability of macrocyclic compounds in the metal determination
4   Discuss the applications of macrocyclic compounds in the areas such as extraction and chromatography
5   Explain the sensitivity of macrocyclic compounds to metal ions

2 Macrocyclic coordination chemistry: Macrocyclic effect, Selectivity and efficiency of complexation
3 The metal extraction from the aqueous solution with macrocyclic compounds: Type of macrocyclic extractant, Efficiency of extraction with macrocyclic compounds
4 Porphyrins and applications of porphyrins in analytical chemistry: Importance of porphyrins and metal-porphyrin compounds, Spectroscopic properties of porphyrins and porphyrin-metal complexes, The use of porphyrins in the separation and determination of metal ions and organic molecules
5 Phthalocyanines and applications of phthalocyanines in analytical chemistry: Metal-phthalocyanine compounds, Spectroscopic properties of phthalocyanines and phthalocyanine-metal complexes, The use of phthalocyanines in the separation and determination of metal ions and organic molecules
6 Crown ethers and applications of crown ethers in analytical chemistry: Properties of crown ethers and metal-crown ether compounds, The use of crown ethers in the separation and determination of metal ions and organic molecules
7 Azacrown ethers, thiacrown ethers and applications of these compounds in analytical chemistry
