Course Objective

The course explains the philosophy and basic principles of quality management in architecture. The course includes the principles of quality management, quality planning, cost of quality, customer satisfaction, continual improvement, total quality management, quality assurance systems, methods used in the quality management process, quality management practices in the building industry. It also covers challenges and success factors in quality management practices in the building industry, strategic approaches to quality management, effects of technology management on the success of quality management. Furthermore in this course it is given information about new quality management approaches to green building projects undertaken by building design and construction firms in the green building industry, relationship between quality management and innovation, effects of quality management on innovation management in the green building industry.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understanding the importance of quality management for success at both project and organization levels in the building industry.
2   Understanding the importance of quality planning and customer satisfaction for managing successfully quality in the building design and construction processes.
3   Having basic skills to apply quality management methods in building design and construction.
4   Understanding effects of technology management on the success of quality management.
5   Understanding effects of quality management on innovation management in the green building industry.
6   Having basic skills on making team working with disciplines related for managing quality in the life cycle process of green building projects.

Course Contents

1 An overview of the course and an introduction to quality management.
2 Definition of quality, management and quality management.
3 Approaches to the philosophy of quality management (Deming, Crosby, Juran, ve Feigenbaum).
4 The principles of quality management Quality planning, cost of quality, customer satisfaction, continual improvement.
5 Total Quality Management Total quality management in building design and construction organizations. Quality Assurance Systems and ISO 9000.
6 Methods used in the quality management process: Benchmarking, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Pareto analysis, Fishbone diagram, Six Sigma, Quality Function Deployment.
7 Application of Quality Function Deployment for building projects.
8 Examination of quality management practices in the building industry. Challenges and success factors in quality management practices in the building industry. Strategic approaches to quality management. Effects of technology management on the success of quality management.
9 New quality management approaches to green building projects undertaken by building design and construction firms in the green building industry.
10 The relationship between quality management and innovation. Effects of quality management on innovation management in the green building industry.
