Course Objective

This course aims to emphasize structures of mega buildings. Research activities of the course will be supported by technical tours as well as literature search.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To list the examples of ancient mega-buildings
2   To list the architects, countries they are in, year of construction and structure of mega buildings
3   To identify the properties that makes these buildings as "mega building"
4   To distinguish the problems encountered during the construction of mega structures
5   To analysis of a mega building's construction (from the foundation to the roof)
6   To present a mega building research

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction 1.1. Aims, scope and method of the course 1.2. Description of Mega Buildings.
2 2.1. Deliberation of Ancient Mega Buildings 2.2. Ancient mega buildings, the old and the newly elected "Seven Wonders of the world" 2.3. Assignment of research topics.
3 3.1. Technical tour to the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
4 4.1. Study of dome designs and constructions within the development of domes. 4.2. Research on Hagia Sophia, Pantheon, Florence Cathedral, Selimiye Mosque and Oita Stadium
5 5.1. Study of seven skyscrapers that were influential in the development of skyscrapers 5.2. Analysis of the technical problems that have been encountered, and their solutions.
6 6.1. Technical tour to Izmir Folkart Towers 6.2. Discussion of the structure and construction of this skyscraper
7 7.1. Aerodynamic problems at skyscrapers 7.2. Wind tests in the mechanical engineering lab.
8 8.1. Importance of sustainability in mega buildings. 8.2. Discussion of the energy production from wind and sun in mega buildings.
9 9.1. Study of the airport designs in terms of various criteria within the development of airport buildings
10 10.1. Technical tour to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport
