Course Objective

The course aims to provide an understanding of the Mediterranean identity within the architectural perception and characteristics. The basic characteristics of the Mediterranean architectural heritage are to be analyzed through the different regions in order to put out an understanding on the divergences/affinities and the cultural inputs within its architectural identity.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Defining the different civilizations that shaped the Mediterranean culture.
2   Questioning the Mediterranean culture.
3   Questioning the basic characters of the architectural heritage of Mediterranean.
4   Defining the Mediterranean identity through the traditional architecture.
5   Questioning the Mediterranean architectural identity through the historic settlements and buildings.

2 The definition of the Mediterranean Culture: cultural layers, cultural diversity.
3 The definition of the civilizations and the historical periods that shaped the cultural layers. 3.1. Roman Empire; Andalucía; Byzantine Empire 3.2. The 1st Transition period; Venetian, Marseille and Genoa Ducats
4 The definition of the civilizations and the historical periods that shaped the cultural layers. 4.1.Ottoman Empire: the expansion throughout the Mediterranean 4.2. The 2nd Transition period: the expansion through the commercial companies.
5 The definition of the civilizations and the historical periods that shaped the cultural layers. 20th century dynamics; Cultural and architectural identities.
6 Definition of the subject of the individual/group studies.
7 The basic factors that shaped the Mediterranean culture: Historical and cultural inputs, Natural Environment, Social Life.
8 The expressions of the traditional architecture; Settlements, public space, buildings.
9 The definition of Architectural identity of Mediterranean through the affinities and divergences: Local differences, religion, tradition, social life, common attitudes.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Instead of the final exam, the students are expected to prepare an academic paper / a research report which subjects their individual studies within the theoretical framework of the lecture.
