Course Objective

It is intended to have the future restorers acquire the skill of criticizing the restoration practices within the context of principles and problems also with the contribution of leaders and the statutes having the quality of being international recommendations and of evaluating the practice alternatives for each sample and finding the optimum approach.

1   Ability to clarify the concepts and methods related to restoration,
2   Ability to present successful and unsuccessful restoration samples,
3   Ability to criticise restoration samples in the context of principles and problems,
4   Ability to discuss the articles of international regulations, related to restoration,
5   Ability to evaluate approaches of famous restorers.

1 Introduction to the course, aim, method and contents of the course.
2 Concept and methods of Restoration.
3 Opinions and recommendations of the 19th century restorers concerning restoration. (William Morris, Ruskin, Philippe Webb) Assignment of take-home subjects.
4 Opinions and recommendations of famous restorers concerning the conservation and restoration of the historical environment. ( Viollet-le-Duc)
5 Things to be and not to be done in restoration.
6 Detailed research and comparative evaluation of international rules and regulations as recommendations about Conservation-Restoration.
7 Discussing international regulations and restorers within the context of orientation in restoration practices.
8 Mid-term Exam.
9 Field trip about the restoration practices in Izmir.
10 Discussing the problems and solution recommendations about the restoration practices in Turkey. Collection of take-homes.
11 Recommendations about the restoration practices in Turkey. 11.1. New construction in the old environment. 11.2. Contemporary annex to historical building. 11.3. Second group practice.
12 Samples for Restoration Practices Abroad.
13 Argumentative study of the selected building samples in terms of restoration principles and practice problems.

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format.

Students' active participation in the course is expected.
-Literature research and archive research.
-Fieldwork (on-the-spot observations and examinations).
-Conveying through oral and visual presentations.
-On-site observation, examination, discussion within the scope of technical trip.
-Development of the ideas which have been suggested through the discussion medium in the classroom & interpretations.
