Course Objective

Covers the concepts and principles of parallel and distributed database systems, real-time database systems and information retrieval systems. Included in the study, a historical review of database systems, development and normalization of database systems, and methods to query database systems are investigated.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Prepare a physical relational database schema for specific business applications
2   Distinguish the differences between relational, hierarchical and network databases
3   Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of relational databases vs the other types
4   Describe the responsibilities of a Database Administrator in an organization
5   Appreciate database systems performance issues
