Course Objective

1. Teaching basic concepts in size reduction
2. Teaching mathematical representation of size reduction and building models
3. Teaching widespread models used in size reduction and determining their parameters
4. Teaching performance and optimization for crushing and grinding circuits

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows basic concepts in size reduction and defines performance
2   Performs general calculations used in size reduction such as ball and powder filling, critical speed, etc.
3   Analyze size reduction processes with population balance methods
4   Determines performance and optimization of size reduction circuits
5   . Knows and uses the models commonly used in size reduction

1 Definition of size reduction, aims, history, breakage theory, liberation size, etc.
2 Summary of earlier size reduction models, Bond grindability testing and interpretation of results, grinding mill selection
3 Mathematical expression of size reduction, commonly used models in size reduction, and determining model parameters
4 Population balance methods in size reduction and their analysis
5 Tane boyutu-kütle balansı (size-mass balance) metodu, breakage rate (s) and breakage distribution (B)
6 Tane boyutu-kütle balansı (size-mass balance) metodu model application
7 Grinding calculations (ball and material filling, critical speed, ball consumption, mill power, mass transfer, residence time, mill selection

10 Chemical additives and viscosity in grinding
11 Measuring performance and optimization of grinding circuits
12 Control mechanism in grinding, model based controls, fuzzy logic control
