Course Objective

Composite materials, which have high performance in structural applications, are used very effectively. Therefore it is necessary to develop accurate reliable predictive methods for describing their failure behavior and to have analytical representation of the individual failure modes and to understand how the physical properties of the constituents affect the fracture behavior of composite systems. The aim of this course is firstly to get the structural behavior and failure characteristics of composite materials with a cracked layer and fiber. Secondly, to calculate energy level by considering the strain energy density criterion to analyze the fracture behavior of unidirectional fiber-reinforced compositesand to understand the catastropic failure due to fiber breaking, matrix cracking and interface debonding. Thirdly, to get the structural behavior and failure characteristics of sandwich materials.

2 Failure of unidirectional fiber/matrix composites
3 Failure of Angle-ply laminates: Through lamina and interlaminar (delamination) cracking
4 Impact and cracking of unidirectional composites
5 Cracks in materials possesing homogenous anisotropy
6 A finite width orthotropic body with a cenral crack; through crack in an orthotropic layer of finite height.

9 Fracture mechanics Analysis of Face /Core Debonds

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and both the lecture and take part in the discussion sessions. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned for that week and presented to open a discussion session.

Assessment Criteria

There will be minimum 2 homeworks and 1 presentation, averaged out grades for which will be 15 % of the overall success of the students. mid-term examinations will be averaged and affect the grade by 35 %. Final exam will be 50 % of the resulting grade.
