Course Objective

To inform about sensory properties of fabrics, objective measurement technology in fabrics, relationships between sensory and mechanical properties; besides, to give information related to use in garment production of findings obtained by objective measurement technology.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To have awareness and information about the sensory properties of fabrics and relationships among sensory, physical and mechanical properties
2   The ability to apply subjective assessment methods in the fabrics
3   The ability to create subjective assessment procedure in the fabrics
4   To have information about objective measurement methods and devices used for the fabrics
5   The abilities to analyze and to interpret information obtained as a result of objective measurement technology in fabrics
6   To learn estimation methods of fabric handle and to gain limited experience about the application of these methods

2 Sensory Properties of the Fabrics - Fabric Handle: The definition of handle The words and the definitions used in relation to handle
3 The determination of fabric handle using subjective assessment methods Factors affecting subjective assessments Preparation of subjective assessment procedures
4 Determination of fabric handle using objective measurement methods Studies done to determine objectively the fabric properties that are thought to be related to handle
5 The physical properties which can measure objectively, related to feature descriptors commonly used for subjective assessment
6 Kawabata Evaluation System for Fabrics (KES-F): The parameters measured in KES-F KES-F graphs of tensile and shear properties and interpretation of these graphs

Course Policies and Rules

In this course, fabric mechanical properties and the relationships among those properties, structural and physical properties are explained to students. Furthermore, the awareness of students about the importance of subjective assessments is provided. During lessons, environment that can share students' experience and knowledge is created, and findings of current literatures examined and researches being carried out are discussed. Attendance is mandatory.
