Course Objective

To teach definition, properties, production methods, end-uses and test methods of functional textiles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the functional textiles.
2   To be able to compare the structures of conventional and functional textile structures.
3   To be able to design a functional textile material for related end-use.
4   To be able to determine production method of functional textile material with desired properties.
5   To be able carry out the performance tests of functional textiles for related end-uses.
6   To be able to associate the conventional production methods with alternative manufacturing techniques of functional textiles.

3 Internal applications -Surgical sutures -Soft tissue implants -Orthopedic Implants -The cardio-vascular implants Test methods and related standards for medical textiles
4 Textiles that are used in the defense industry -Military equipment -Textiles for environmental impact protection -Camouflage textiles
5 Ballistic structures Test methods and related standards for textiles used in defense industry
6 Civil engineering textiles -The definition of geotextiles -Types of geotextiles -Functionality and properties of geotextiles -Test methods and related standards for civil engineering textiles

Assessment Criteria

Student performance is evaluated with exams and homework success. Homework performance is assessed by the topic, textile material design related with the topic, determination of production method necessary for design and carrying out the performance tests.
