Course Objective

To give grounding in core concepts (theoretical and applied) of marine sciences for work in a wide variety of marine environments (coastal zone to the deep oceans). To provide the marine scientist with the skills to achieve the acquisition, processing and interpretation of a range of acoustic data sets. To teach the marine geologist and geophyscist, a range of key skills including problem solving, presentation, communication appropriate to this sub-discipline.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be familiar with the basic principles of seafloor surveying and exploration
2   be able to integrate and interpret a range of seafloor data types
3   understand the basic theoretical concepts behind high resolution acoustics
4   have acquired practical experience of seafloor surveying
5   successfully integrate a diverse set of geological and geophysical data sets for the solution of a geological problem
6   apply a range of key skills at Masters level and also be able to design surveys and report your results professionally

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be held in the form of lectures and field applications including theoretical and knowledge transfer involving the acquisition, processing, integration and interpretation of high resolution acoustic data from the inner Izmir Bay, individual components include:
Boat practical (two days): This will involve the acquisition of single and multi-beam swath bathymetry, side scan sonar and high resolution subbottom profiler.
Computer practicals: 3 computer practicals for the processing of sea-bed and sub sea-bed geophysical datasets.
Assessment: The final work will be presented as a paper submission - an individual written piece of work based on the project work undertaken in week 6.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Exams
Two tests will be carried out during the period.
Midterm (20%); Final exam (40%); Project (%25); Presentation (%15).
Examination, obtaining information about the methods used in Seafloor Imaging and Mapping and will measure the ability to apply the method. Each exam will include the class material, and will include the assigned applications.
2. Project, Presentation and Participation
Students working on the problem and understand them, it is essential for students to complete the course. Prepare presentations on any subject related to the content of the course and project, the students with the realization of debate and discussion in the classroom of students prepared presentations, class participation and interpretation capabilities will be developed.

Assessment Criteria

1. The exam will take place in one of the main topics of each chapter. You will be asked one or more questions for each topic. The rating evaluation of exam questions will be carried out according to the point system determined by instructor.
2. Students to be derived from participation in points (i) attendance is condition, (ii) the student's quality of response to questions asked by the instructor during class, and (iii) will depend on the contribution to the students to create a positive learning environment.
3. The degree that a good turnout for the border between the two grades will carry your stage to the next level.
4. Subject to be clearly understood, the accuracy of the data evaluation will be evaluated on presentation prepared about the course content.
