Course Objective

The aim of the PLN 5017 New Settlements is to cover initially the problems of urbanization and spatial planning in general and than to develop necessary back ground for the students to think about the future of urban areas. The process of such a study requires detailed analysis of potentials of an urbanized area and the region. Process of city planning is subject to discussions in comparison to structural planning and the concepts of basic regional planning approaches are also needed to be over viewed. The cases of worldwide examples of new settlements and the experiences in Turkish and European cities are taken as unique entity being subject to investigations and supplementary theoretical study will be carried for further investigations to provide the students with the ability to comprehend urban planning strategies and policies with a an emphasis to new ways of urban living.

2 A Historical Approach. Garden City Movement. Urbanization and Urban Growth.
3 Definition of the metropolitan region and metropolitan city Subject of term paper
4 Definition of urban regions and regional growth. Urban sprawl. City size and rank size distribution.
5 Discussions on urbanization, centralization and de-centralization. Urban Growth, Land Use, Alternative Growth Models.
6 Emergence of New Towns and Settlements. Research for term paper
7 Delineating the metropolitan influence area. Problem of Urban Fringe. Social and economic structure in of urban areas. Management aspects.
8 Mid-term exam.
9 Utopia and Futurist Approaches.
10 Form and Structure of the Cities. Threshold Analysis.
11 Turkish cases.
12 European Cases.
13 Third World Countries.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through studio practices. Students will learn topics by attending and practising the planning studio. Planning problems will be given to students in the 1st Week and they will be asked to prepare their solutions on the problems given to them.
