Course Objective

In this course, the relations of production, society and culture under the Modernity and Postmodernity conditions will be discussed. Introduction of researches about development of cities; analysis of traces of towns on the structure of society and culture and focus on the condition forming the spaces is aimed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to rename content of modern science (Knowledge),
2   will be able to explain the effect of the Positivist-deterministic science on determination of planning rationality (Comprehension),
3   will be able to interpret planning structure directed by capital accumulation process (Application),
4   will be able to question the effects of transformed space shaping society (Analysis),
5   will be able to propose new social-public arrangements about planning discipline (Synthesis).

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Characteristics that determine the structure of pre-industrial society; Modernization, modernity and modernism concepts.
2 The basic paradigms of the Enlightenment thought; Formation and development of "Science"; Bifurcation natural sciences and social sciences Reading list will be given in this week.
3 Positivist-deterministic view of science I: Reality / Intrumentality / Objective Rationality.
4 Positivist-deterministic view of science II: Causality / Objectivity-Subjectivity / Generalization / Concept Dependency
5 Relations of production structure in terms of modernity, and the city / the reasons transform urban space. The role of economic, social and cultural structure in shaping the city
6 The rise and development of urban planning theories on the basis of "Positivistic-deterministic understanding of science"
7 Midterm Examination
8 Modernity as a community design and urban planning as a project of modernity.
9 Representations of space; representational space; abstract space; concrete space.
10 Criticism of modernity under the context of economy, society, culture and individuals.
11 The radicalization of modernity; postmodernity debate.
12 The articulation of world system under the condition of postmodernity: "Globalization" and "post-Fordism"
13 Time-space compression; "Site Cities-Global Cities"
14 Being free to nature, people, culture, identity and consciousness

This course will be given through lectures. Students will learn topics by attending and listening the lectures which supported by visual presentations. Students are expected to make the readings.
