Course Objective

This course aims at giving general information about the dynamics, characteristics and location behaviours of small scale industrial production in cities, and focusing on the transformation process that took place within the past decades as well as the regional policies affecting the pattern of industrial location.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able to define the dynamics and characteristics of small scale industrial production,
2   will be able to list the factors that are effective in location behaviours of firms,
3   will be able to interpret the global/national/regional/local policies and the impact of economic crises on the location pattern of small scale industrial units,
4   will be able to analyse a specific sector of small scale industrial production in detail,
5   will be able to criticise the existing situation of the sector selected as case study.

2 Location and relocation processes, decentralization phenomenon, discussions over reading list
3 Characteristics of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), qualitative and quantitative criteria used in the definition of SMEs in different countries
4 The importance of SMEs in global and national economies
5 Structure of SMEs in Turkey and related public policies
6 Effect of economic crisis on SMEs, new global division of labour
7 Review of studies in Turkey, discussions over reading list
8 Theoretical framework underlying the location choice of small scale and industrial production
9 Changes in the location of small scale industry in relation to changing economic system in developing countries
10 Determining the subjects and contents of homework to be prepared by students
11 Field survey, researches in public institutions
12 Homework Presentation as Midterm Examination
