Course Objective

This course aims at analysing the economic structure of the city via focusing on the components of urban land use pattern such as the central business district, the zone of transition, the suburban area and the rural-urban fringe. It also aims at explaining the urban rent theory, the role of the state and the market in the formation and sharing of urban rent, the property and investment markets, investment appraisal and the economics of development and welfare economics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students will be able to define the urban land use pattern, theories of urban structure and urban growth,
2   will be able to identify the factors affecting the retail, office, industrial and residential locations,
3   will be able to question the role of the state and the private sector in the formation and sharing of urban rent,
4   will be able to interpret the impacts of global/national/regional economic crises on the components of urban economy,
5   will be able to analyse the economic structure of the city within the context of urban planning discipline.
