Course Objective

Able to make a several kind of gemstones into a final product using many cutting and polishing techniques.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The objectives and principles of a gem cutting (cabochon and facets).
2 General types and shapes of gems. In general, gem cutting (cabochon and facet types of cutting shapes).
3 Abrasives and polishes used in lapidary.
4 All kind of gemstone s cutting except diamond, cabochons (cutting, carving machines and engraving techniques).
5 Polishing gems except diamond (machines and techniques). Drilling through gemstones except diamond (mechanical, ultrasonic and laser drillers and drilling techniques).
6 Polishing gems except diamond (machines and techniques). Drilling through gemstones except diamond (mechanical, ultrasonic and laser drillers and drilling techniques).
7 Mid-term exam.
8 Gem tumbling except the diamond (rotating and vibrating tumblers and their processing techniques).
9 Carving techniques for the gemstones except the diamond.
10 Bead making and sphere cuts out of gems except diamond (machines and lapidary techniques).
11 Facet cutting of gemstones (machines and lapidary techniques). Diamond cutting tools (general cutting principles and characteristics).
12 Diamond cutting techniques.
13 Historical improvement in full cut diamond shape.
14 Full cut lapidary techniques.
