NATURAL BUILDING STONES AND GEMSTONES

Course Objective

The use of natural building stones gains greater acceptance for engineering and architectural applications day by day. Thus, a better understanding of the properties of natural building stones by the engineer and technologist is necessary. In this course, the use of natural building stones as construction materials (in concrete and road as aggregates), industrial raw materials of cement, lime and gypsum are introduced.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Characterization of the natural stones as building material, knowing the effect of structural features on the engineering behavior
2   Utilizing the features of the natural stones and engineered stones choose for suitable application
3   Strengthening the details of structural elements and building materials with applications
4   Understanding the laboratory devices with regarding of standard test of the natural building stones that can be used as aggregate in concrete and road.
5   Interpretation of the obtained data according to the suitable place of use
