Course Objective

Having the student learn the history of the subject and material on which she/he will study; having the student understand how the historically and archaeologically natural stones and other materials have been beneficial to mankind in history, and emphasizing the importance of these materials in cultural history.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to comprehend the basic relations between archeology and natural stones
2   Ability to understand the basics of archaeological research techniques
3   Ability to identify the style and interactions in the workmanship of rock.
4   Ability to distinguish the rocks according to their construction period
5   Ability to state their research knowledge and experience in written form.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Culture and civilization concepts. Description of culture and civilization concepts, the difference between them, the reason why they are used instead of each other, ideology of these concepts.
2 Relationship between human and nature; cognitive evolution of mankind. The war of existence, evolution of human brain, cognitive evolution from tool using hominid to tool making human.
3 Making and using stoneware tools at prehistoric times.The usage of limestone, flint stone, serpentinite and obsidian and the reasons of their usage during human evolution. Tool examples, drawings of stone tools.
4 Fire, stone and metal relationship - 1 The usage of fire, the physical and evolutional advantages of its usage, metal tools besides stoneware tools and accessing metallurgy. Stoves, ovens and the materials used for them. From primitive life to settled life and urbanization. Social division of l

10 Gemstones in archeology-2 Characteristics of the gemstones discovered at the archeological sites, their types and the usage of gemstones as a status sign
11 Usage of glass and glassware in ancient times - 1 Quartz , glass made of quartz, primary uses of glass, glassworkers, glass craft and its evolution to be an art. Glass art, characteristics and the usage of glass art in ancient times.
