Course Objective

Radar is one of the powerful sensing tools for earth science applications. Actively operating radar system can gather data in all weather conditions. The applications of radar remote sensing systems reach from digital elevation modeling to earth surface deformations. This course will deliver the principles of radar and applications like elevation model generation, land cover mapping etc.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will be able to relate physical and mathematical models of a radar image
2   They will be able to interpret a raw radar image
3   They will analyze SAR images and will be able to interpret fringes on the image.
4   They will differentiate between different examples of applications: single shot range measurements for sea and ice measurements, radar echoes over a field (SAR) for area surveying.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Students will be given reading assignments a week in advance. Each week s lecture will begin with an introduction to the fundamentals of that week s content. Students will discuss the week s entire content with the lecturer s assistance in groups. Students will be assigned problems which they will solve individually and/or in group in laboratory environment. Students will write reports and present them orally.
