Course Objective

In this course, it is aimed to understanding of the mechanism of fatty acid biosynthesis, the structure and function of lipases, and the role of lipids as a defense system in plants and other organisms. It is also intended to investigate the biotechnological importance of lipids as well as biodiesel, biosurfactant, and other industrial applications.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students able to explain fatty acid biosynthesis mechanism,
2   Students able to explain structure, function, properties of lipases and biotechnological applications by exemplifying them,
3   Students able to recognize and discuss the importance of lipids in the defense system of plants and other organisms,
4   Students able to examine the synthesis of fatty acid esters and the biotechnological production of biodiesel fuels,
5   Students able to evaluate the production of biosurfactants and examine the areas of biotechnological applications.

5 Terpenoid based defense in plants and other organisms
6 Lipases: Structure, function, and properties
7 Industrial applications of lipolytic enzymes
8 Midterm exam
9 Enzymatic synthesis of structured lipids
10 Enzymatic enrichment of polyunsaturated fatty acids
11 Enzymatic synthesis of fatty acid esters and production of biodiesel fuels
12 Microbial conversions of fatty acids to value added products
13 Biosynthesis, production and applications of glycolipid and lipopeptide biosurfactants

Assessment Criteria

Meaningful learning of the basic concepts given in presentations, association of concepts with each other, establishing the cause-result relationships and making comments by using the information available for problems and evaluating idea generation are carried out with mid-term and final exams, active participation to the lecture, homework.
