Course Objective

Macroalgae are of reat importance in the marine ecosystems. The marine seaweeds are used in different industries such as cosmetics, pharmacy etc. In this course, biochemical mechanisms in macroalgae metabolisms, their primary and secondary metabolite production, bioactive agent isolation and characterization and patents from marine organisms will be discussed in great detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify important macroalgae species in marine ecosystems
2   Give remarkable examples for primary and secondary metabolites and explain them
3   Know isolation and characterization methods of marine compounds
4   Follow current literature on the biochemical and biotechnological importance of macroalgae
5   Work in international project groups
