Course Objective

This course aims to investigate enzymatic, genetic and hormonal regulation mechanisms of metabolic pathways, metabolic behaviour in starvation and exercise and metabolic disorders.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn metabolic regulation with enzyme activity, control and regulation of enzyme reactions,
2   Discuss and compare controls of carbohydrate, lipids and nitrogen metabolisms with enzyme activities, explain genetic regulation of metabolism with gen expression,
3   Explain hormonal regulation with receptors,
4   Discuss answers and adaptations strategy of metabolism to the extraordinary conditions such as starvation, thickness and exercise,
5   Classify disorders and metabolic diseases such as disorders of carbohydrate and amino acids metabolism, diseases of glycogen and lipid metabolism.

2 Metabolic regulation with enzymes, control and regulation of enzyme reactions

5 Control of nitrogen metabolism with enzyme activity
6 Genetic regulation of metabolism: regulation and control of gen expression
7 Hormonal regulation of metabolism: receptors, types of receptor, hormones and metabolism
8 Midterm exam
9 Hormones affecting the regulation of metabolism
10 Digestion and absorption: organs in digestion, digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, digestion and absorption of lipids, digestion and absorption of proteins, absorption of water and electrolyte
11 Adaptations of metabolism to extraordinary conditions: Starvation and metabolic answer, thickness and metabolic answer, exercise and metabolic answer
12 Metabolic disorders: disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, disorders of glycogen metabolism
13 Metabolic disorders: disorders of lipid metabolism, diseases of amino acid metabolism

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and both the lecture and seminar hours and take part in the discussion sessions. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned for that week and presented to open a discussion session.

The students performance will be evaluated by the questions that will be asked in midterm (20%) and final exams (40%) and homework (40%).
