Course Objective

The aim of this course is to get students to comprehend the expanding role of bioanalytical chemistry in academic and industrial environments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to understand the general principles of analytical biochemistry and application on biomolecules and develop the analytical abilities and ability to present and criticise arguments.
2   To be able to select the valid method for analysis and evaluate the obtained results.
3   To be able to explain the principles of separation techniques and methods based on polarity, ionic nature, size and shape.
4   To be able to learn the electroanalytical methods such as potentiometry, conductimetry, coulometry, voltammetry.
5   To be able to explain nature of radioactivity, detection and measurement of radioactivity, biochemical use of isotopes.

2 Interaction of radiation with matter, molecular absorptiometry, absorptiometer design, molecular fluorescence techniques
3 Atomic spectroscopy techniques, magnetic resonance spectroscopy
4 Principles of separation techniques, methods based on polarity
5 Methods based on ionic nature and size
6 Methods based on shape
7 Potentiometry, Conductimetry, Coulometry, Voltammetry, Biosensors
8 Midterm exam
9 Nature of radioactivity, detection and measurement of radioactivity
10 Biochemical use of isotopes
11 Discrete analysers, flow analysis, robotics
12 General processes of the immune response, antigenantibody reactions
13 Analytical techniques-precipitation reactions, and immunoassay

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format. All class members are expected to attend and both the lecture and seminar hours and take part in the discussion sessions. Besides the taught lecture, group presentations are to be prepared by the groups assigned for that week and presented to open a discussion session.

The students performance will be evaluated by the questions that will be asked in midterm (20%) and final exams (40%) and homework (40%).
